The CPUT Res soccer league kicks off with great vigour.

The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) student residence soccer league, which aims to hang loose students from overwhelming academic stress and discover young talent, opened four spots in the Res League 1st division of 16 teams that will be scratched up to 20 teams this year. 


With 16 teams contesting for the four spots available, the playoff games started with enormous vitality in all four games that kicked off before noon in four separate fields at the CPUT Bellville Campus sports grounds on Wednesday. 


The City Edge Residence FC from the District Six campus in Cape Town led the way to the second round of the playoffs as they secured a 2-0 victory over New Res FC. City Edge FC struck first early in the game to take the lead before halftime and came back in the second half animated to score their second goal to seal the victory. 


Meanwhile, in Field C, Mountain House Residence FC defeated Sheriff Residence FC 4–3, following Kabelo Cele’s late winner in the dying minutes of the game. Both teams were awarded penalties by the referee but failed to convert from the spot. 


In the other six playoff games that kicked off at noon, four teams—Orchards FC, MGR1 FC, President FC, and Freedom Square II FC—were victorious in their matches. New Market Junction FC and the newcomers, Rise FC, also managed to win their opening games in penalty shootouts. NMJ FC defeated Ragkam FC 4-3, and Rise FC prevailed over Navarre FC, winning 4-2. 


Concluding the first round of playoffs, the chairperson of the CPUT Res League football executive committee, Kedibone Mbiza, expressed his gratitude to all the teams that participated in the first round of the qualifiers. 


“Even though we started late, we were able to maintain everything, and the boys gave us what we expected, 


“To be honest, as chairperson, I’m happy with my team of referees, and for every team that was able to pitch up, I’m really grateful,” he said. 


The second round, which is also the last round of the playoffs, will be played on Thursday morning, and the four teams that win the second-round games will be promoted to the 1st Division of the CPUT residence league. 


The last round fixtures are as follows: 

10:00: President House FC vs Rise FC 

10:00: Freedom Square II vs City Edge FC 

12:30: Mountain House FC vs Orchards FC 

12:30: New Market Junction vs MGR1
